LFC Foundation is inviting local ex-military service men and women to join its Military Veterans programme.

Using football, the project aims to support and re-engage veterans back into civilian life, while recapturing the 'spirit of service' and comradeship that is often lost on the return from service.

Ex-military personnel of all ages and abilities can enjoy free weekly football sessions - at both the Liverpool FC Academy and Netherton Goals - as well as competing in regular national tournaments.

LFC Foundation's Military Veterans project is, however, more than just a football programme. Alongside physical activities and coaching, the participants have access to health, educational, employment and volunteering opportunities, and are encouraged to complete their FA coaching badges or other training courses.

More than 20 veterans have achieved qualifications through the project to date, including FA Coaching Level One and Level Two badges, Referee Level One and nationally recognised mentoring certificates.

Steve Hollis, LFC Foundation project lead, said: "These sessions not only give our participants the chance to increase their physical activity and exercise levels, but also to improve their mental wellbeing through open communication, encouragement and the formation of new friendships with like-minded people.

"We aim to help to rebuild the confidence levels of those who may have been negatively impacted upon their return to civilian life."

LFC Foundation's Military Veterans football sessions take place on Thursdays from 6pm to 7pm at Netherton Goals, and from 3pm to 4pm on Sundays at the LFC Academy in Kirkby.

The programme also provides weekly football sessions to ex-military personnel inmates at HMP Altcourse.
