Liverpool Football Club's 'Ability Counts' team will depart for Switzerland today as they aim to retain their title at the European Disabled football tournament.

The Reds won the crown in a thrilling final against FC Basel in Zurich last year, and they'll aim to mount a successful defence of the trophy in the four-team tournament which will run in conjunction with the Swiss U16 Cup.

Like Liverpool, Basel will also compete in the competition once more along with FC Zurich and Werder Bremen.

LFC's Disability Liaison Officer, Colin McCall said: "This is the sixth year that we will compete in a European soccer camp.

"As always, this is a great chance for the Ability Counts players to meet with our European counterparts and bond with each other.

"Of course, the lads did fantastically well to win the competition last year and they're determined to do it again, but it's also an opportunity for them to have fun and take home some fond memories."

Liverpool will jet off from Manchester Airport on Tuesday morning and head for Switzerland, before taking in a training session in Ruggell this evening.

The competition kicks off on Thursday afternoon, with the final scheduled for Saturday.

McCall believes the tournament will prove advantageous both on and off the pitch to all clubs taking part.

He said: "This is an opportunity for us all to exchange information and ideas, which is obviously productive for us all.

"Liverpool Football Club's idea is simple - to provide safe, free football for all its disabled footballers, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. We believe in social integration, not segregation."
