Steve McManaman believes the arrival of Stewart Downing will add a new dimension to Liverpool's attack.

The one-time Academy graduate is a firm admirer of the England international and he claims our new arrival will bring out the best in Andy Carroll.

"Kenny has always wanted to play people out on the flanks to open up the pitch and play exciting, expansive football," said McManaman.

"It's no surprise he's looking for wide players to strengthen the squad as he doesn't have an out and out winger."

He added: "Downing knows the Premier League like the back of his hand. He's proven at that level and knows what it takes to be successful.

"If you bring in someone from abroad they can take time to adapt but Downing will fit straight in and get on with everyone instantly."
