Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has become a manager after accepting a position at Stockport County.

The 37-year-old - who appeared 283 times for the Reds and played a key role in Istanbul - replaces Ray Mathias at Edgeley Park.

Hamann worked as a coach at Leicester City last season under Sven Goran Eriksson - and the former England manager helped convince him that Stockport would be a good move.

The German's appointment on a one-year deal follows a takeover of the club by a Liverpool-based consortium.

Everyone involved will now aim to restore Stockport to the Football League following their relegation to the Conference in May.
