Simon Mignolet believes Liverpool were required to demonstrate a different side to their game after they battled their way to a hard-earned three points against Burnley on Boxing Day.

The Reds ultimately left Turf Moor victorious after a sumptuous Philippe Coutinho assist set up Raheem Sterling for the match's only goal just after the hour mark.

However, the visitors were made to fight for their win after a testing encounter in Lancashire - and Mignolet feels they can be satisfied with their efforts.

"We got what we came for and that's the three points so we're very pleased," he told the Liverpool Echo immediately after the final whistle in Burnley.

"We did the ugly bits of the game well and fought really hard as a team.

"At half-time we were able to go in and settle. It was still 0-0 and then obviously we did the job in the second half.

"Coming here to Burnley, we knew it was going to be tough. It's a difficult ground to come to and it was always going to be a battle.

"All that mattered was getting the three points and we've done that. Now we move on to the next one against Swansea on Monday."

Mignolet entered the game as a 16th-minute substitute at Turf Moor after Brad Jones was forced from the field with a thigh injury.

The Belgian custodian had previously been named on the substitutes' bench for the Reds' clashes with Manchester United, Bournemouth and Arsenal.

"You always have to be ready when you are on the bench as the second choice goalie," said Mignolet.

"Anything can happen so I always prepare myself as normal. When you get the chance, you just hope you do well.

"When I went on I was still warm from the warm-up. I just tried to stay relaxed. I'm not the kind of guy who gets flustered easily.

"I just tried to focus on my own game. Sometimes things get tough but that's when you have to step up. I'm a positive guy and I'll continue to keep my head down and work hard as I always do. Nothing changes.

"Brad and I get on really well. We work hard and support each other.

"We each do our best every day in training to get better. I'm sure he will be back fit soon.

"Whenever I step on to the pitch I have a job to do and I'm pleased we managed to get the win."
