Callum Nicholas scored twice as Liverpool U18s beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in a friendly encounter in gale-force conditions at the Kirkby Academy on Wednesday.

Neil Critchley fielded the likes of Tom Brewitt, Adam Phillips, Will Marsh and Ovie Ejaria, and the young Reds warmed up for Monday's FA Youth Cup tie with Bradford City in fine style.

Nicholas fired two superb efforts and an own goal completed the scoring.

"Considering the conditions, we played some excellent football at times and it was a good work out for the lads," Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com.

"Callum scored a superb second goal and it was good to give Tom Brewitt some minutes after his recent injury."

Critchley also provided an update on Sam Hart, who left the field on a stretcher after picking up a head injury during Tuesday's dramatic UEFA Youth League win over Basel.

He said: "Sam is okay. He was allowed home last night from hospital and even though he's still a bit groggy he is doing well.

"There is no serious injury which is the main thing."
