Former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has revealed his gratitude to the club and supporters for the 'unforgettable' time he spent at Anfield.

The tough-tackling Argentinian joined the Reds in 2007 and became an instant favourite due to his work-rate, passion and commitment to the cause.

He clocked up 139 appearances and contributed two goals during his stay on Merseyside before departing for Spanish giants Barcelona.

As he prepares for his third World Cup, however, the man who celebrates his 30th birthday today paused to send a special thank-you.

"I lived three unforgettable years with Liverpool," he told The Guardian.

"I will always be grateful for everything to the club, and especially the fans. From day one they behaved impeccably and were amazing."
