Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has taken a step forward in his recovery from an ankle injury, with Brendan Rodgers hopeful that the No.2 will return 'in the next couple of weeks'.

The 29-year-old suffered a high ankle sprain during the Reds' 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the beginning of September and has not kicked a ball since.

But after Johnson tweeted to reveal that a protective boot had been removed on Monday, Reds boss Rodgers provided the latest news on the full-back's fitness.

"Glen is the type of player that you don't realise until he's not in the team, what you are missing," the Northern Irishman said.

"He is athletic and he started the season very, very well. Against Manchester United he was outstanding.

"He's got the boot off his foot and he is working very hard. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks he will be back."
