Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has tipped two-goal teammate Daniel Sturridge to be among the Barclays Premier League's top scorers in 2013-14.

Having sprinted out of the blocks with 11 strikes in 16 appearances after joining the Reds in January, the 23-year-old has bagged the winner in successive fixtures against Stoke and Aston Villa.

It was Enrique's pass which started the move for Sturridge to notch at Villa Park on Saturday and afterwards the Spaniard insisted that Liverpool's No.15 has 'everything' a striker needs.

"It was an amazing goal from Danny," Enrique told the Liverpool Echo.

"I'll be claiming the assist, but really the goal was all down to Danny. Philippe left the ball for him, and he did all the rest.

"The manager said last week Danny can be one of the top strikers in this league and I agree. The longer he stays in this form, the better it is for us.

"He is a top player and I think he can challenge to be the top scorer in the league this season. If he has luck with injuries and continues in this form then he will be right up there.

"For me, he has everything you want from a striker - he is quick, he is strong and can play with both feet."

Enrique clocked up his 80th appearance in Liverpool colours on Saturday, having been an almost permanent fixture at left-back since arriving at Anfield two years ago.

Following the loan signing of Frenchman Aly Cissokho last week, the 27-year-old has fresh competition for his place in Brendan Rodgers' team - a challenge he welcomes.

"I welcome the competition," he added. "If Liverpool sign another left-back then I understand it because it was just me here last season.

"Sometimes Glen Johnson had to play left-back. We need two players for every position, and I like it when I have competition.

"If you have somebody there who is really fighting for your position then it can bring more out of you because you know if you don't play well then you'll lose your place.

"Hopefully that helps me and I can play at my level as I did in the first six months when I first arrived at Liverpool."

Enrique and his defensive colleagues have yet to concede this season and indeed have recorded a clean sheet in nine of their last 15 competitive matches.

The Reds' No.3 stressed the importance of stability at the back as the players prepare for a week in which their League Cup quest begins and Manchester United roll into town.

The left-back said: "We played well in the first half against Villa but in the second half we were made to drop deeper.

"They put us under pressure. That's normal for a home team, and it's always difficult to come here.

"They had to take chances going forward in order to try to take something from the game but I thought we did really well defensively.

"It's important to keep clean sheets, not just for the defenders but the whole team. Keeping a clean sheet away from home always builds confidence.

"We know with the forward players we have we are always going to have a chance to score goals. If we keep clean sheets then we are going to get a lot of points.

"The most important thing is we have six points from two games and we want to continue like this. Hopefully we can get through in the League Cup and then get another three points against United.

"We showed last year that we can fight against any team, and we did that against United. We are even stronger when we play at home.

"But we have Notts County before that so we have to focus on that and if we can keep winning we will keep building our confidence."
