Dirk Kuyt admits the defeat to Arsenal, inspired by his international teammate Robin van Persie, was hard to take.

The Reds had the chances to beat their rivals for fourth spot, including a penalty from Kuyt that was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.

Instead it was the Gunners who prevailed 2-1 thanks to a brilliant first-time volley from van Persie in injury time.

The Holland striker had earlier levelled after a Laurent Koscielny own-goal put the Reds in front.

"It's very disappointing," said Kuyt. "I thought the team played really well. We should have scored at least three goals.

"I enjoyed linking up with Luis Suarez and we created enough chances but we need to kill those chances.

"To lose was just unbelievable. Without van Persie they are a completely different team.

"I had a feeling I didn't hit the penalty as properly as I normally do but that's football - sometimes you score goals, sometimes you miss penalties.

"We had other opportunities to kill the game."

The result ended Liverpool's 16-game unbeaten run at home but the focus will now be on our away form, with the Reds travelling to Sunderland on Saturday.

"With no midweek match we now have some time to recover after a lot of games over the last few weeks," Kuyt said. "We will be fresh for the Sunderland game."
