Spurs legend Chris Waddle believes Liverpool are serious contenders for a Champions League finish and has hailed the manner in which Kenny Dalglish's side bounced back after defeat at Bolton two weeks ago.

In ten days that followed on from the 3-1 loss, the Reds booked their place at Wembley, sent Manchester United crashing out of the FA Cup and secured a dominant win over Wolves at the Molineux.

And Waddle has no doubts that with both Liverpool and Tottenham currently in such good form, tonight's clash at Anfield is set to be a cracker.

"Liverpool play a good tempo, they've got a lot of confidence about them at the minute," he told 'Friday Night Live' on LFC TV.

"I was at the Bolton game which was probably their worst performance of the season but since then they've kicked on and it just shows how good they are that they've beat Man United, Man City, got a good result at Wolves and they're starting to gel.

"You've got to say that they're serious contenders to get the fourth spot along with Arsenal and Chelsea. Tonight will be a very good game."

The former England international played his part in Tottenham's FA Cup run of 1987 where Spurs narrowly lost out to Coventry in the final at Wembley. He made 173 appearances for the White Hart Lane club before moving to Olympique Marseille in 1989.

Looking forward to tonight's clash, he was quick to emphasise the potency of Harry Redknapp's side when it comes to hitting teams on the break and earmarked the two players who Liverpool must be wary of.

"Liverpool are attack-minded, Tottenham are very good on the counter attack, so Kenny will have to play it a bit cagey, I would think, he doesn't want to give anything away," said Waddle.

"Bale's in good form, Modric is always in good form, Tottenham made a couple of signings - Louis Saha could be playing if Adebayor's injured. But everyone knows on Merseyside that if you get Louis Saha fit then he's a very good player.

"Tottenham really are at their best when they are attacking teams on the counter-attack, so it's all set up for a very, very exciting game."

Waddle, who starred 191 times for Newcastle during a five-year spell at his hometown club, was quick to sing the praises of fellow Geordie Andy Carroll, highlighting some of the young striker's qualities.

He said: "One thing I've always admired about Andy Carroll though is that he never hides. In all the games I've watched him play for Liverpool he's always available.

"He's not frightened if he misses, if he misses, he's there again and hopefully for him and Liverpool, that goal he got at Wolves will kick-start his season. "
