Lucas Leiva has pledged to return stronger than ever from the anterior cruciate ligament injury which has ended his season.

Supporters had their fears confirmed on Thursday when Liverpoolfc.tv revealed the Brazil international required surgery.

The player himself tweeted: "I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying a lot on the pitch.

"I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dream with the LFC shirt.

"I am sure I'll never walk alone."

Lucas had been in arguably the best form of his career prior to the injury, which was sustained in an innocuous challenge with Juan Mata during our Carling Cup win over Chelsea on Tuesday.

No player in the Barclays Premier League has made more successful tackles this season.
