Jamie Carragher is determined to make Exeter City the first step on Liverpool's path to Carling Cup glory.

The Reds head to St James Park on Wednesday to take part in their first round two encounter in the competition since September, 1999.

Carra insists the domestic cup competitions have taken on an extra significance due to the club's absence from Europe this year and is eager to help secure a smooth passage into round three.

He said: "Exeter is a massive game for us. We haven't been in the Carling Cup at this stage for a long time.

"There's no Europe this season so everybody at the club is determined to do as well as we can in the domestic cups.

"We need to make sure we get through that before thinking about Bolton."
