Andy Carroll believes it is only a matter of time before supporters witness what both he and Kenny Dalglish's remodelled team are capable of.

The England striker played 90 minutes as the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by a Sunderland side who recovered well after Luis Suarez's opener.

Any frustration at missing out on all three points was tempered slightly by the fact only three teams claimed victories on the opening weekend - and regardless of the result, Carroll is optimistic about the season ahead.

"We are disappointed with the draw but all the lads are happy to get the first game out of the way," he said.

"We played some good football and created some good chances in the first half. But we sat off them a bit in the second half and let them get into the game.

"We created enough chances to prove that we can all fit in the team together.

"It is going to take everyone a little while to gel together but we showed with our passing and movement and in terms of chances that it is all there.

"We want to get a few more goals but we all think that it is there.

"We will take some positives out of it and now we've got the next game to look forward to."

Carroll became Liverpool's record signing in January only to see his initial months on Merseyside disrupted by injuries.

A memorable brace against Manchester City at Anfield illustrated why many expect him to be England's No.9 for years to come and now, after a full pre-season, the 6ft 3 striker is hopeful of adding to his collection of picturebook moments in a red shirt.

One man confident that will happen is boss Kenny Dalglish, who last week spoke of his belief that Carroll will now begin to show his best form.

"I needed a good pre-season," said our frontman. "I was injured a long time so it was nice to play a few games and get my fitness up, as well as getting a few goals. Pre-season has helped me get over all the niggles that I have had. Now it is a case of pushing forward and keeping myself fit. I have got to show what I can do.

"Kenny is a great manager and it is great to know that he has given me his backing. I have just got to give it all back to him.

"In training he is giving me little pointers here. Obviously I need to listen to him and put them into my game.

"It is nice to know that he has got faith in me and it is a big help. Now I have got to do what I did to get myself here and I am out to prove that I can do it here. I love playing for this club."

Carroll arrived at Anfield alongside Luis Suarez just before the transfer window closed in January.

The former's injuries meant they have enjoyed just six starts together so far.

Now, on the back of Suarez's triumphant Copa America campaign, the duo are together again - and Carroll is glad to be reaquainted.

"It was great to be back alongside Luis," he said.

"We haven't seen too much of him in pre-season as he's been away and done well for his country.

"He has done well for the club and you can see how important he is with his performance (v Sunderland). He is raring to go.

"Last season he was great with the chances he created and the goals he put away. We are all looking for him to do it again this season."
