Liverpool Football Club are saddened to learn of the passing of former youth coach John Bennison at the age of 88.

John began working at the club during the days of Bill Shankly and was a popular figure in the legendary Bootroom.

He joined the Reds as a youth coach in 1970 and went on to become assistant manager of the reserve team under the likes of Chris Lawler and Phil Thompson.

He also remained active at the club throughout the management of Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, and still could be seen appearing in the dugout until retiring in 1993.

Paying tribute to John, former manager Roy Evans said: “John did a great job for Liverpool Football Club as part of the youth set-up.

“It was a role that sometimes goes unnoticed with the supporters, but if you look at the players who come through to play for the first team working under John that is a tribute to how good these people were at their job.

“John was a smashing fella. He was always there to help, not just with the coaching side of things, but he also helped on the outside as well. He will be sadly missed.”

The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
