Klopp: We'll look to use the passion to our advantage... but so will Everton
Liverpool will aim to benefit from the energy, emotion and passion surrounding the Merseyside derby this afternoon – but Everton will be looking to do exactly the same, according to Jürgen Klopp.
The Reds play host to the Blues at Anfield in the 228th edition of the fixture later today, with just six points separating the teams in the Premier League table.
Klopp is confident his players will rise to the occasion – particularly in the absence of injured teammates – in what is sure to be a fervent atmosphere, but acknowledges our opponents will be aiming to do just that themselves.
He wrote in his column in 'This is Anfield': “We do know we will be without Adam Lallana because of an injury sustained while playing for the England national team last weekend. This is frustrating because of Adam's influence and importance for the team, but of course we cannot affect this now.
“As with any injury, or suspension, when a player is unavailable it presents opportunity to other players. This is why we have squads of players and why it is so important that the players apply themselves in training each and every day and also use the opportunity to play U23s football at the appropriate moments.
“I have to say one of the standout attributes of this group of players is the attitude they show each and every day in training; even the players who have found opportunities limited at times.
“From the first moment we reported back in pre-season I have told the squad that if we are to achieve something special, as a group, then everyone would have a part to play at some point and everyone must be ready.
“With the week we have coming and the injury issues we are dealing with, then this is very much a time where people can demonstrate their importance to the team and the club and make their contribution when called upon.
“One thing is for certain: there is no requirement for motivation ahead of a 'derby game'. We are a team that does not look to hide the emotional importance of matches like this. We look to channel it, to use it and to embrace it.
“We all understand that the amount of points available is the same this afternoon as it will be against Bournemouth and Stoke City in the coming matches. But it is silly not to acknowledge that today is special because of who we are playing.
“The big problem is that it is special for Everton as well and therefore we can expect our opponents to be just as motivated as we are.”
