Georginio Wijnaldum wants Liverpool to approach the battle for a Champions League spot with confidence in the remainder of the season.

The midfielder put the seal on an important win against Arsenal on Saturday night, sweeping home a stoppage-time goal to clinch a 3-1 result at Anfield.

The Reds leapfrogged the Gunners with the success, which maintained an outstanding unbeaten record for Jürgen Klopp’s side in meetings with fellow top-six teams.

Amid the satisfaction, though, Wijnaldum warned that the standards shown at the weekend have to be kept up if Liverpool are to return to Europe’s elite competition.

“You can’t afford to lose games,” he said.

“It is always possible that you will not win but it is the way you play the game. You must play with the same intention: to win the game and give everything you have.

“We have to make sure at the end of the season we are there. Now it is good for the confidence but if we are going to do it like we play before – playing well and then playing bad again – then it is going to be tough for us to come in the top four.

“We have to have a good run and be confident we can finish in one of the spots.”
