Jürgen Klopp took heart from the way Liverpool overcame a number of pre-match problems to produce 'a brave performance' against Manchester United.

The manager was unable to call on the services of Joel Matip, as the club seeks clarity on the defender’s eligibility, or the injured Nathaniel Clyne – who was ruled out at the last minute and replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold for his full Premier League debut.

A first-half penalty from James Milner appeared to have handed Klopp’s men maximum points at Old Trafford, until Zlatan Ibrahimovic took advantage of freedom inside the box to head in an 84th-minute equaliser.

Liverpool had chances to score a second before and after United’s leveller, but had to settle for a point from the latest meeting with their fierce rivals.

The manager was understandably disappointed to have had victory snatched away late in the game, though took satisfaction from the efforts of his players throughout an intense contest.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “I’m happy with 80 or 90 per cent of the performance, because it was really difficult to play in our situation with the line-up, struggling a little bit with the late decision on Clyney to bring in Trent, and having this or that player not available.

“The lads did outstandingly well, I think. I really enjoyed the game. It was a brave performance; before the game, a lot of people thought Manchester United – the rolling wheel – could roll over Liverpool. But we were there.

“Everybody in a Liverpool kit, on the pitch or at home, can be fine with the performance.”
