An ability to ‘find solutions’ in order to break down resolute opposing defences during the heat of battle has given Divock Origi confidence Liverpool can maintain their excellent form well into 2017 – continuing at Sunderland this afternoon.

The Reds have been required to subtly tweak their approaches mid-match on several occasions this season in order to overcome their adversaries – most recently against Stoke City at Anfield last month.

And Origi believes they’ve demonstrated an ability to react and adapt while out on the pitch which will stand them in good stead as January brings another busy period of fixtures and differing challenges.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “We have to be able to find ways to break down the other teams. They can change tactics – they could play with three, four or five at the back, but we just have to adapt.

“We’ve shown we can find solutions during a game, so we have to keep making progress and I think we’re in a good way. We have to prepare for every scenario as well as possible and then go there and play our football.

“We know Sunderland have qualities and we know that it won't be easy. But we have to adapt to their playing style, go there and play our football, try to find solutions and stay patient – if we do that, I am confident we can win this game.”

Liverpool’s journey to the Stadium of Light comes less than 48 hours after they faced Manchester City at Anfield.

A run of three games in six days has provided Origi with his first real experience of the renowned English fixture schedule during the festive period after an injury sustained on Boxing Day in 2015 ruled him out of last season’s run.

“It’s a busy period, but it’s a very nice period to try and get as many points as you can,” he continued. “We are in a good way and hopefully we can get the three points against Sunderland.

“Of course, you have less time to recover but we do everything to maximise that time. Also as a group we try to work as much as possible, covering as much as possible, in that time. That’s key before playing the next game.

“It’s true that last year I was injured against Leicester. I know it’s a very busy period here and when you come from another league, you’re used to having a vacation.

“But we’ve been working very well and it’s also special to play during this period. To be able to win at Christmas is good! Now we have to look forward and try to win again.”
