On this day 17 years ago, Steven Gerrard scored the first of his 186 goals for Liverpool with a brilliant solo effort against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield.

December 5, 1999 represents a landmark date in the glittering career of a true Reds legend.

In a sight that would become gloriously familiar over the next 15-and-a-half years, a teenage Gerrard surged forward from deep, eased his way past two defenders before slotting a cool low finish beyond Owls goalkeeper Kevin Pressman.

Gerard Houllier's Liverpool won the game 4-1, with Sami Hyypia, Danny Murphy and David Thompson also on the scoresheet.
