Liverpool v West Brom: Live matchday blog

Liverpool recorded a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield thanks to first-half goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho.

The manager's verdict

So, what did Jürgen Klopp make of Liverpool's 2-1 win over West Brom? Click here to read his post-match thoughts.

Klopp: "I haven't seen a weak team in the Premier League so we have to work for it. I know we will have problems and my job is to find solutions."

Klopp: "We have 20 points, it wasn't possible to get more tonight. It's really difficult for me to be satisfied with football games but a 2-1 keeps you more awake than a 4-0. Maybe in this moment we aren't experienced enough in a situation like this."

Klopp: "They were one time quicker in mind than us in the game and they scored a goal. That's football."

Klopp: "In this moment it feels better that we only won 2-1 rather than three or four nil.

"Defending, first of all, is not letting them create a lot of chances. I don't remember a lot of chances."

Jürgen Klopp has arrived for his post-match press conference - updates to follow.

So, it may have been nervy at the finish but Liverpool were full value for the victory overall. Here's our on-the-whistle report from Anfield.

And here's how the table looks for us after tonight's win...

Here's the story of the game in stats...

93

Full Time

FULL-TIME

That's it, it's all over at Anfield and Liverpool get the three points.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho did the damage but Gareth McAuley's late strike for West Brom made for a tense finale.

92

That was close. Wijnaldum strikes from the edge of the area...it beats Foster but can't nestle in the corner.

90

Substitution

Divock Origi is our last change. He's on for Sadio Mane.

90

Three minutes of added time...

88

Yellow Card

Jordan Henderson is shown a yellow.

84

Foster denies Liverpool again - this time repelling Firmino's attempt to slip the ball beyond him after being teed up by Mane in the box.

83

Firmino meets Mane's cross with a glancing header, but it's straight at Foster.

81

Goal

Goal for West Brom - Gareth McAuley.

A corner breaks invitingly for the Baggies man inside the box, and he makes no mistake with a thumping close-range finish.

79

Substitution

Liverpool make their first sub of the game and Adam Lallana goes off to be replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum.

74

Another effort on goal from the visitors - this time Morrison clips over from the edge of the area after Matip and Milner held up Rondon in the box.

70

A chance for West Brom to pull one back as the ball breaks for Chadli at a half-cleared corner. Thankfully, he pokes wide of the upright. A warning, though - this game isn't over.

65

An absolutely stunning block from Olsson denies Can a certain third after Coutinho set him up 12 yards out. Unlucky.

64

Substitution

West Brom's final change sees Robson-Kanu come on for McClean.

58

A brilliant save from Foster ensures it remains 2-0 here as the Baggies' 'keeper claws Lovren's header from Coutinho's free-kick out of the top corner.

57

It's almost 3-0 but Foster makes a sprawling stop at the feet of Firmino after Coutinho's pass had played him into space in the box at the conclusion of a counte-attack.

51

Substitution

Second West Brom change - Morrison on, Phillips off.

49

Coutinho almost slides Firmino through on goal, but Olsson does enough to thwart the forward.

46

Kick-Off

SECOND HALF

Here's the tale of the tape from that first half...

45

Half Time

So far, so very, very good for the Reds.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho have given Liverpool a two-goal lead at the break after a dominant opening 45 minutes.

More of the same in the second half will do just nicely.

42

Yellow Card

The Baggies' Claudio Yacob sees yellow.

41

Roberto Firmino told us earlier this week at Melwood he, Coutinho and Mane had a celebration up their sleeves for the next goal - and we witnessed it after Philippe struck.

Not too sure about your dance moves, though, boys!

39

A bit of wonderful skill from Firmino results in him sliding the ball to Clyne, who strikes over the bar.

35

Goal

GOAL! Philippe Coutinho!

The Reds double their lead - and again, it's a strike that's pleasing on the eye.

A combination of Can and Mane win the ball from Foster's sliced clearance before the latter plays it to Coutinho on the left of the area. Everyone inside the stadium is expecting him to either shoot or cross with his left first time.

However, our No.10 has other ideas and sells two defenders a dummy before drilling home with a reverse shot into the near post.

32

Liverpool spring another attack after winning the ball deep. This time it results in Lallana clipped over the bar from just inside the box.

27

Liverpool firmly in control here: Clyne fires a delightful ball across the face of goal. Can isn't too far away from getting a toe to it.

20

Goal

GOAL! SADIO MANE!

Liverpool are ahead with a lovely, lovely goal.

Coutinho brilliantly dummies Milner's pass in midfield, allowing the ball to run for Can to take the charge to the West Brom defence.

He slips it to the left for Firmino, whose beautifully-weighted first-time cross picks out Mane at the back post. He gleefully sweeps home a volley with his side foot.

Excellent stuff.

18

Henderson's hooked cross from the right finds Milner's run into the area; the vice-skipper loops his header well over the bar, however.

14

Dangerous counter-attack from the visitors, but a combination of Lovren and Firmino prevent Phillips' attempted cross from picking out an unmarked Rondon in the centre of the box.

6

The ball breaks invitingly for Coutinho on the box, but his shot on the spin crashes against a defender and West Brom clear.

There was late drama in last season's corresponding fixture.

Divock Origi came off the bench to snatch a 2-2 draw and a point for the Reds with an equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Liverpool's most recent home Premier League win over West Brom came in October 2014, when Adam Lallana's first goal for the club helped earn a 2-1 victory.

The view from the Hawthorns

Baggies boss Tony Pulis held his pre-match press conference yesterday, and it's safe to say he's been impressed by Liverpool's start to the season.

"They’ve got some fantastic players. Their front five are exceptional. They’ve all got the ability of taking players out of the game individually," said the Welshman.

Nathaniel Clyne has also been talking about the importance of making Anfield a fortress this season.

"We've done really well this season home and away and we want to continue putting on good performances and try to get a good result against West Brom," the defender told Liverpoolfc.com.

Pre-match

Jürgen Klopp called on Liverpool to be 'angry' but 'patient' against West Brom in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

And Emre Can agrees with the boss.

"We have to be angry before every game and we have to go into the game with confidence because we know our strengths," says the Reds midfielder.
