James Milner believes getting off to a good start is vital for England if they are to enjoy a successful European Championship.

The Three Lions are set to fly to France today as they prepare for their opening game of the tournament against Russia in Marseille on Saturday.

England’s opening-game record at the Euros reads four defeats and four draws in eight tournaments.

With games to follow against Wales and Slovakia, Liverpool’s No.7 is certain it is imperative for Roy Hodgson’s side try and make a statement of intent in the first game against Russia.

“What I’ve learned more than anything is don’t lose your first game, whatever happens," said Milner.

“It’s great to win it and get off to a flying start, but if you can’t get that win make sure you are solid and don’t concede late on looking for the winner.

“As soon as you lose that first game in a three-game group you put yourselves under pressure straight away.”

Liverpool’s vice-captain also hailed the versatility of a squad that is eager to make an impression on the big stage.

He said: “The squad’s got a bit of everything. We can play a variety of formations, there are players with so many different strengths – pace, trickery, solid players and more defensive minded players.

“I think as a squad together we’ve got so many options and the manager can pick a completely different team which won’t reduce in quality but will play a completely different style and fit into that game.”

As Milner prepares for his fourth tournament with the Three Lions, he insists he will take it all in his stride and be ready to give his best when the opportunity comes his way.

He added: “When you fly out that’s when it really starts and you get that tournament atmosphere, everyone is there together – hopefully for four or five weeks.

“I probably don’t get nervous for the tournament now as it’s my fourth one. I still get a few nerves before the actual game but I’m pretty relaxed.”
