Ian Rush is hoping Liverpool FC Legends can inspire the current crop to victory against Manchester United by getting one over on the old enemy themselves in Stockholm.

The club's all-time top goalscorer will reprise his role as player/manager when a group of former Anfield regulars face their Red Devils counterparts in the Swedish capital next week.

The likes of Luis Garcia, Patrik Berger and Robbie Fowler are among those plotting the downfall of a Bryan Robson-led United side.

And Rush believes the fixture holds extra significance, coming as it does just over a week before Brendan Rodgers' side head to Old Trafford in the Barclays Premier League.

"At the end of the you're going out there representing the club, you've got supporters coming to watch you and it's your job to give it your best shot," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"It's very competitive and that's how it should be. Bryan Robson is in charge [of United] and he'll be exactly the same, he'll be telling them: 'We want to win this game'.

"You've got the first team playing the week after and it's a little incentive to say if we can do that, why can't you go and win as well?

"It's great entertainment but it's also very competitive."

Rush also expressed delight at supporting worthy causes through the game - though he doesn't expect that to dampen the players' desire to win.

"It's great if you can still put your boots on and have a run around, I think it's fantastic," he added.

"It's all for a good cause in the LFC Foundation but, when you're playing Manchester United, there's always that little bit of extra determination to do well against them.

"We've got some great legends, some great players, and so have Manchester United.

"You always have that rivalry with them and I'm sure we've got a squad capable of putting up a good performance."
