Returning to action after the World Cup, Sterling grabbed the only goal of the game on a night when Lazar Markovic gave an impressive debut.
The match also saw the return to action of skipper Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson as the Reds won their first game in the Guinness International Champions Cup.
