There were contrasting emotions for three former Liverpool favourites on Wednesday night as Argentina beat Holland to progress to the World Cup final.

Dirk Kuyt and Javier Mascherno were in opposing starting line-ups in Sao Paulo, and both turned in outstanding displays during 120 minutes of goalless action.

Another ex-Red, Maxi Rodriguez, entered the fray for Argentina in extra time, but the right to face Germany in Sunday's final was determined by a penalty shootout.

It came as no surprise to Liverpool fans to see Kuyt hold his nerve to net a pressure kick for Holland, but Maxi proved to be the hero as he successfully converted from 12 yards to send the South Americans through as 4-2 winners.
