The Liverpool FC Foundation recently made a special kit donation to a Gambian school and clinic which has links to the city.

A total of 20 adult and 50 boys and girls Liverpool shirts were donated by Reds fans Angela and Barry Carter from Childwall, who built an LFC-themed school and clinic in Gambia with their life savings.

The couple were inspired to commit to the project after visiting the country on a week-long holiday.

Following a short trip to a neighbouring village close to their resort, they were both shocked to discover that the village of Wullingkamma in West Africa had no school.

"During our stay I met a local resident who informed me that private land owners had knocked down the local school in order to reclaim the land, leaving the children without access to education," explained Angela.

When she and her husband returned to the United Kingdom they decided to take immediate action and began to plan the construction of a school and clinic for the villagers to use.

In less than one year, the school was in operation and providing an education to more than 500 children. The government also committed to provide funding to employ the teachers at the school and ensure it continues to grow.

The clinic, which is located just a short distance from the school, is due to open soon. It will provide anti-natal care for local women and much needed malaria treatment and care.

Forbes Duff, Liverpool FC Foundation international programme lead, said: "It is fantastic what Angela and Barry have achieved with their vision, determination and hard work.

"The Foundation is committed to helping communities, both locally and beyond, and we hope that the children and staff enjoy their new shirts and continue to succeed."

Angela added: "I am absolutely delighted with the donation by the Liverpool FC Foundation. The residents of Wullingkamma absolutely love football and they will be over the moon to receive these Liverpool FC shirts. I can't wait to see the look on their faces."
