Steven Gerrard has revealed why he’ll be playing for a young cancer sufferer when England take on Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

The international friendly will raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Gerrard joined Joe Hart, Jermain Defoe and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in spending time with youngsters at the Three Lions' St George's Park this week.

The Liverpool captain chatted with 13-year-old Mikey Grimmett from Worcestershire, and said: "He's a lovely young lad.

"For someone so young to battle against cancer with such determination is a lesson to us all. That's why on Wednesday night against Scotland, I'm playing for Mikey."

Mikey added: "Today was really fun. All the players were so lovely with us all and it was great to meet them all.

"I'm a massive Liverpool fan so the highlight was meeting my idol, Steven Gerrard. We had fun chatting and he said I was good looking!"
