29 years since Souness made them Blue
A solitary strike from Graeme Souness gave Liverpool Milk Cup glory in the all-Merseyside final on this day 29 years ago.
After a goalless draw in the first game at Wembley, 52,089 supporters packed into Maine Road for the replay, and a 21st-minute strike from the inspirational Scot ensured Joe Fagan's side retained the League Cup.
Liverpool team: Grobbelaar, Neal, Kennedy, Lawrenson, Whelan, Hansen, Dalglish, Lee, Rush, Johnston, Souness. Unused sub: Robinson.
Recalling his winning goal Souness said: "It was a great occasion for the city of Liverpool to have two teams in the final. It meant a lot to people.
"We were very lucky to come away from the first game with a draw; there were some harsh words exchanged at half-time, Alan Hansen cleared one off the line and there was some debate about it being handball. The replay was dour but memorable for me as I scored. I mis-controlled it and had my back to goal but flashed a leg at it and it just dipped in front of Everton 'keeper Neville Southall before going in.
"It was a bit ad hoc when we were presented with the trophy. A fan got in the way between me and Bruce Grobbelaar as I passed it down the line but it was all good fun."
