96 tribute jackets to be auctioned
The second batch of jackets worn by Liverpool and Manchester United players at Anfield in memory of those who died at Hillsborough will be auctioned, starting today.
They were a symbol of unity between two fierce rivals, poignantly decorated with the number 96 and in December 2012, fans bid for the jackets with all money raised - almost £7,000 - going to the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG).
The jackets were worn by both teams following the release of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report, which exonerated fans and revealed the truth about what happened when 96 supporters died on April 15, 1989.
The jackets, as well as the Liverpool black away version worn against Sunderland the previous week, have been donated by the clubs to HFSG, with Liverpool players signing their individual tops.
And you can now bid for the items worn by the likes of Pepe Reina, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.
Margaret Aspinall, chair of the HFSG, said: "We are delighted with the money raised so far and are thankful to both clubs who donated the jackets to the Hillsborough families.
"It isn't too late to get one of these iconic jackets so I urge fans from both clubs to bid to help raise much needed funds for the families' fight for justice."
