That personal haul came from Steve McMahon, who produced four of the Reds’ 10 unanswered strikes in a League Cup victory against Fulham at Anfield on September 23, 1986.

More than a century earlier, John Miller was the first ever to do it at the club, by plundering five goals in a 7-0 victory over Fleetwood Rangers in December 1892.

George Allan then managed the feat twice, scoring four versus Port Vale in September 1895 and against Rotherham Town five months later – the latter during a 10-1 win.

Andy McGuigan (five), Sam Raybould (four) and Bobby Robinson (four) were next, followed by Jack Parkinson (four) and Fred Pagnam (four).

Dick Forshaw netted all of Liverpool’s goals in a 4-1 defeat of Sheffield United in October 1924, before Willie Devlin surpassed a treble twice in quick succession.

The Scot was only a Reds player for seven months in 1927 but fitted in a pair of four-goal salvos in the space of five weeks, past Bury and Portsmouth.

Gordon Hodgson scored four times on two occasions in the 1930s, either side of Harold Barton becoming the first for the club to better a hat-trick in the FA Cup.

Barton supplied every goal as Liverpool prevailed 4-2 at Chesterfield in January 1932.

Fred Howe had Kopites beaming when he racked up four of the goals in a 6-0 trouncing of Everton in the Anfield derby of September 1935.

Jack Balmer, Albert Stubbins and Louis Bimpson each bagged four-goal hauls moving through the 1940s and ’50s.

The lesser-spotted five-goal effort recurred in September 1954 as John Evans hit all the goals for the Reds during a 5-3 win over Bristol Rovers at Second Division level.

Billy Liddell scored four times on Christmas Day that year and managed to notch four in a single match again later in the same campaign.

Roger Hunt and Alf Arrowsmith each tallied four just nine days apart as 1963 became 1964, the former in the First Division and the latter the FA Cup.

However, Tony Hateley’s quartet in a cup tie with Walsall in 1968 would be the single other case for almost two decades afterwards.

And then Ian Rush came along.

The Welshman so famously helped himself to four goals in a 5-0 triumph at Goodison Park in November 1982, then later got five against Luton Town and put four past Coventry City.

Next came McMahon’s entry into the list.

His tally of four in the League Cup hammering of Fulham might have been five, too, had he not sent a penalty kick against the crossbar.

In European action in the early 1990s, Dean Saunders scored four versus Kuusysi Lahti and Rush did the same in a meeting with Apollon Limassol.

Fulham were on the receiving end once again in October 1993; this time, the emerging Robbie Fowler hit all the goals in a 5-0 League Cup success.

Fowler then notched four against Bolton Wanderers in September 1995 and Middlesbrough a little over a year later.

Michael Owen claimed a four-goal haul twice during his Liverpool career. The first was versus Nottingham Forest in October 1998, the second past West Bromwich Albion five years on.

A decade passed before another instance of a Red going beyond three in a game – Luis Suarez’s magnificent four to inspire a December 2013 win over Norwich City.

The 37th – and most recent – case in history of a Reds player netting four or more times in a single match was provided by Mohamed Salah.

In March 2018, the Egyptian continued his phenomenal and prolific debut season amid snowy conditions at Anfield.

Salah found the target twice in each half that afternoon as Liverpool defeated Watford 5-0 in the Premier League.
