Dejan Lovren could lift the World Cup on Sunday - a sight that would delight his Liverpool teammate Joel Matip.

Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium is the venue for today’s World Cup final, with Lovren’s Croatia to take on France.

Reds No.6 Lovren has started five of his country’s six games at the tournament so far, and is set to once again marshal Croatia’s backline on international football’s biggest stage of all.

Matip has been an interested onlooker from afar throughout the World Cup, and he wants his fellow centre-back’s team to round off their impressive campaign in glorious fashion.

“I hope so. I think against the French, they are amazing players, but he’s the player I know from this final so we hope that we will see him with the trophy,” Matip told Liverpoolfc.com, after being asked if he wants to watch Lovren win the famous prize.

“They [Croatia] have a lot of good players, I think they have a brilliant generation there. Croatia is a small country with not that many people, but they are great footballers and they are going to the World Cup final. This is really special.”

Matip went on to praise Lovren’s performances during the competition, while also expressing his sympathy for Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose England side were eliminated by Croatia in the last four.

“Going to the World Cup final is not too bad!” Matip said of Lovren’s displays in Russia.

“So I think he did a lot of good things [and] I am happy for him, but it was also hard for Jordan in the last game.

“Now we can all be happy for him [Lovren] and we are happy that Jordan maybe and Trent will be coming [back to Liverpool] earlier.”
