Paul Glatzel stressed the importance of team success over individual glory after his hat-trick helped Liverpool U18s progress in the FA Youth Cup.

Young Reds captain Glatzel took his tally for the season to 20 in all competitions by netting his third treble of the campaign during Monday’s 4-0 fourth-round win over Accrington Stanley.

The forward, who turns 18 in February, showed off the full range of his goalscoring talents in St Helens with a looping header followed by two nimble finishes both teed up by strike partner Bobby Duncan.

“It’s a great feeling,” Glatzel told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It’s nice to score the goals but it doesn’t really matter who scores them. Me and Bobby work well up top, he set me up twice. We set each other up and want to score goals for the team. It’s all about the team.

“In the cup, it’s important to get the result - play as well as you can and get through to the next round. We did that with four goals and a clean sheet, and we’re happy with our performance.”

Highlights: U18s 4-0 Accrington

Monday was the latest success in what’s been a positive season for Barry Lewtas’ side so far.

Liverpool currently top the U18 Premier League and are in the last eight of the Premier League Cup - where they will face Manchester United on Saturday - as well as the fifth round of the Youth Cup.

The challenge awaiting Glatzel and his teammates next in the Youth Cup is a home tie against Wigan Athletic, who won away at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City 2-1 and 6-2 respectively to reach this stage.

Liverpool-born Glatzel continued: “We played well and got through to the next round but we need to do the same against Wigan.

“It’s going to be a tough game, they are playing well this season. Anything can happen in this cup. We need to make sure we focus on ourselves and get through. Hopefully we can go all the way.”
