Adam Phillips believes Liverpool U18s' fighting spirit was in clear evidence when he netted the late winner that saw the Reds progress to the sixth round of the FA Youth Cup.

The midfielder found the back of net in the 92nd minute, following good work by Ben Woodburn, to give his side a 2-1 victory in the tie with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Thursday night.

Herbie Kane had opened the scoring in the first half to put Neil Critchley's side one-up, but Adam Crookes levelled for the hosts with just two minutes to go.

However, extra-time wasn't required when Phillips - who has a habit of coming up with late goals such as a late equaliser against Everton in the league back in September - popped up again right at the death to spark wild celebrations.

After the game he told Liverpoolfc.com: "I think it was a typical cup game; we fought till the end and luckily we were winners.

"Ben used his pace and got in behind, I just thought I'd keep up with Ben, hoping he'd find me. I slotted home nicely.

"It was great with everyone celebrating together. It means a lot to the lads and puts us into the next round."

Kane broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season and was pleased to progress to set up a trip to either Arsenal or Coventry City in the next round.

He said: "It's good that it's my first goal, I've been wanting one for a long time. It was a good cross [from Brooks Lennon] and I just managed to get onto it and slot home.

"It was a good result, we ground it out. I didn't think we played as well in the second half as we did in the first half, but we managed to get the result and we're in the sixth round.

"I don't mind who we play. Obviously it will nice to play at the Emirates [Stadium] but Coventry would be a different sort of game and a different test for us."
