Reds set to lift Premier League trophy at Anfield tonight

It’s been more than 30 years since a Liverpool FC captain last lifted the league trophy at Anfield, but tonight Jordan Henderson will crown an incredible Premier League success surrounded by his teammates and manager Jürgen Klopp.

Liverpool FC captain Jordan Henderson will lift the Premier League trophy tonight in honour of the club’s supporters, who have waited so patiently to see the Reds win the ultimate prize in English football.

A trophy presentation will take place after the clash against Chelsea FC at Anfield.

While fans of the club must watch at home as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, Henderson knows that he and his teammates could not have secured the title without the supporters and everyone involved with the club.

In his programme notes for the clash with Frank Lampard’s side, Henderson wrote: “I have been asked many times since we were confirmed as Premier League champions to sum up how I feel and I’m not too proud to admit I don’t think I’ve produced a good answer yet.

“Part of that is because the initial feelings were too overwhelming. Anyone watching the media interviews in the minutes after it was confirmed could see that. Another element is that we still had a job to do and a relatively long wait until this moment.

“I think now I can find the right word: gratitude.

“There are so many different people responsible when a team is successful and as players we are privileged to attract the most attention, the most praise and the biggest rewards. But behind the team there are so many different individuals and groups who make a side successful.

“At Liverpool every single player in our dressing room recognises how fortunate we are to have the best in the world looking out for us and after us – and on a night like Wednesday it’s important to express that appreciation.”

Manager Jürgen Klopp will watch the team he built celebrate the ultimate achievement, just over one year since also securing the UEFA Champions League.

“The boys worked so hard for it,” said Klopp. “Everybody worked so hard for it so the celebrations should be as good as possible. I will be in the best of spirits, on a professional basis it’s one of the biggest, greatest days in my life.

“To get our hands on this trophy, that everyone was waiting so long for... I will be proud of the boys and what we’ve done together at this club. It’s a milestone, it’s an important day but not the last very important day for us!”

The boss has also been paying tribute to a player who has improved so much in his three years at Anfield that he can now be considered one of the finest full-backs in the world.

Andy Robertson may have only cost £8m from Hull City in July 2017, but Klopp knows that he can’t put a price on the Scottish star’s influence since establishing himself in the team.

“It was not about the money that we took him - your price can be £8m but if you are not good enough then £8m is pretty expensive!” said Klopp.

“It’s a lot of money for somebody who is not good enough, that’s how it is.

“Andy Robertson was somebody we brought in because he was a player we thought who could really help us. It was always clear that he had to improve a few things but a few things were already then that good that we said: ‘OK, come on, let’s give it more than a proper try.’

“And I couldn’t be more happy because all the things I thought about him, he’s much better. He’s a much better person, he’s a much better football player, he has an incredible personality.

“So, a great three years. An absolutely massive win-win situation for a wonderful lad from Glasgow and for the club as well, so perfect fit.”

One man who will hope to emulate the success of Robertson and become a pivotal part of Klopp’s plans is young midfielder Curtis Jones.

The 19-year-old has been rewarded for some fine performances this year with the No.17 shirt from next season onwards, having also recently signed a new, long-term contract with the Reds.

Jones – who has been wearing No.48 - has been a Liverpool FC supporter since childhood, and has already scored some pivotal goals in the first team, most notably the winner in the FA Cup against Everton FC and his first Premier League goal in the recent win over Aston Villa FC.
