Liverpool have emerged as the favourites to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli this summer, according to the bookies.

The Argentina international has turned down a mouth-watering £800,000-a-week deal to join the Chinese Super League.

Higuain's future is still uncertain with Napoli keen to keep hold of him.

But the 28-year-old looks set to quit the Serie A club after a falling out over finances.

Higuain scored a stunning 36 Serie A goals last term as Napoli finished second behind Juventus.

And his situation has been monitored by Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

But Napoli are keen to get his full release clause - which amounts to around £79m.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said: “There are no direct offers.

"Only by meeting the release clause of €94,376,000 will the player leave Napoli.

"Otherwise Higuain will stay for the remaining two years of his deal."
