Liverpool are firmly in the race to sign Porto star Hector Herrera in the summer transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

Herrera has scored 19 goals in 111 appearances since making his debut for Porto in 2013 but the 26-year-old is now being heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

Gianluca Di Marzio suggests the Reds are providing ‘serious competition’ for the midfielder this summer, along with Serie A outfit Napoli.

Jurgen Klopp is looking to bring in midfield reinforcements ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and Herrera, among others, has emerged as a target for the German boss.

Manchester United are known to be long-term admirers of the Mexico international but a move to Old Trafford has never materialised.

It’s understood the Merseyside outfit are also very interested in Udinese midfielder Piotr Zielinski who spent last season on loan at Empoli.
