Hamburg are ready to challenge Liverpool to sign Neven Subotic in the summer.

The Borussia Dortmund defender has has an injury-hit season and found it tough to regain his starting place ahead of Sokratis Papastathopoulos alongside Mats Hummels.

In January, Liverpool were linked with the Serbian as they looked for defensive reinforcements after suffering an injury crisis.

Subotic was signed for Dortmund by Jurgen Klopp and the pair are thought to have a strong relationship.

And according to German newspaper Bild, the centre back could be bought for just £3.8million.

Hamburg sporting director Peter Knabel has confirmed their interest in signing Subotic, offering him regular first team football.

"We have looked into this matter in the winter. Subotic is one of the most prominent players on our radar," he told the Hamburger Morgenpost.

"The player is in a difficult situation. We are aware.

"He wants to play and, naturally, wonders about his future. But we have confidence in our squad."
