Liverpool continue to make assessments of target Ruben Neves after stepping up their interest with an informal approach in recent weeks.

The Reds are understood to be leading the chase for the 18-year-old midfielder, who has also attracted interest from many of Europe's biggest sides.

Mirror Sport revealed Liverpool's interest in January, and the Merseyside club have stepped up their watching of the youngster in the second half of 2015.

Neves, who is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, is a deep-lying midfielder who has attracted praise for his maturity and technique.

On Tuesday they sent a scout to watch Porto vs Maccabi Tel Aviv, where Neves demonstrated his standing among his teammates by becoming the youngest captain in Champions League history.

He had previously become the youngest-ever player to feature for Portugal’s U21 side and is expected to receive full honours imminently.
