Xherdan Shaqiri’s influence on Liverpool’s play is clear to Jürgen Klopp.

The No.23 took his goal tally for the Reds to six in 18 appearances - 10 of which have been starts - by finishing off a slick team move during Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

Switzerland international Shaqiri has also provided three assists since his summer transfer from Stoke City, and Klopp has offered a positive assessment of his progress at Anfield.

“Good, good, good - he adapts more and more to our football,” the boss said.

“With the ball he [has] changed our style. You can see in the moment when Shaq gets the ball in a bit of space, everyone is running. It’s because everybody expects to get the ball in behind and stuff like that. That’s a good sign and gives him a few options [and] that helps of course.

Shaqiri's 2018-19 Premier League stats

“So it’s fantastic so far, really fantastic, and there is still a lot to come. He knows that and we are in constant talks about where he can still improve his game, but with the ball he is obviously doing brilliant things.

“The goal [versus Newcastle] was not maybe the most difficult goal we scored, especially not for him, but it was brilliant play: Hendo’s pass, Trent’s cross, that was really, really outstanding. Staying in the situation, counter-press, win the ball back - that was brilliant.

“But what he did so far was more than OK, to be honest.”
