Arsenal v Liverpool: Live matchday blog

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Reds went ahead through James Milner just after the hour, but Alexandre Lacazette equalised late on for the hosts.

Jürgen Klopp's side remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season, though, and top the table by a point ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea's games on Sunday.

Post-match

That's it from the boss.

We'll have a full summary of his press conference here soon.

Post-match

Klopp: "Today was no less spectacular for me [than last season's 3-3 draw here]. I know Arsenal had chances but I think we had the biggest chances in the game."

Post-match

Klopp: "It was intense, very intense. It is clear Arsenal are in a very good moment... but our first attack showed we were there, too. Our set-pieces were outstanding - Virgil said to me after the game he should have had a hat-trick!

"A point at Arsenal will always be an absolutely good result."

Post-match

Klopp on Mane’s disallowed goal: "I think it should’ve been a goal, that’s how it is. It’s football… it was a brilliant attack, so it’s a pity it didn’t count. But we made a few more mistakes than the ref."

Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool: Talking points

An absorbing encounter ended with a point apiece. And five talking points to consider...

Post-match

Mixed emotions for Milner

Liverpool's goalscorer has given his immediate reaction to the draw in north London…

"[We are] very disappointed really, which is a good thing I suppose, playing away at Arsenal," Milner told Liverpoolfc.com at Emirates Stadium.

"To be 1-0 up in the second half and not see it out, we are disappointed; with the chances we created we should have scored a few more goals.

"It's pleasing we are creating those chances, but we could have been a bit more ruthless and maybe not put as much pressure on ourselves not to concede to win the game."

Post-match

Get all your match stats and take a look at how the top of the table looks after that draw below.

We'll have post-match reaction from the away dressing room at the Emirates as soon as we get it.

Full Time

An enthralling match ends all square.

James Milner gave Liverpool the lead with an excellent side-footed finish just after the hour mark, before Alexandre Lacazette levelled with eight minutes remaining.

Both teams had a goal disallowed for offside in an end-to-end first half, and Virgil van Dijk struck the post just before the interval.

Van Dijk then forced Bernd Leno into an excellent save with a powerful header shortly after Milner’s opener, but Lacazette had the final say with a well-taken equaliser.

The Reds remain unbeaten in the Premier League after 11 games this season, however, and top the table by a point ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea's games on Sunday.

Goal

Lacazette equalises.

The striker beat Alisson to Iwobi's pass and curled home from an angle.

80

Substitution

A first change for Liverpool, as Shaqiri replaces Firmino with 10 minutes of normal time left.

74

Leno tips Van Dijk's header over the bar!

The Reds are pushing for a second here.

69

Close!

Mane is inches away from connecting with Salah's cross, but Arsenal clear the danger away for a corner. Firmino then nods Milner's delivery just wide.

65

50 up for Milner

That was our No.7's 50th Premier League goal, 14 of which have been for the Reds.

63

Good save Alisson!

The Reds 'keeper tips Torreira's shot over the bar as Arsenal seek an immediate response.

61

Get in!

Milner breaks the deadlock!

Mane's cross is palmed away by Leno, but the Liverpool skipper is there to send a superbly-controlled, low shot into the net from 18 yards on the rebound.

61

Goal

MILNER!!!

52

Brilliant defending by Van Dijk crowds Mkhitaryan out in the area. Arsenal have come back into it after the Reds began the half on top.

50

Liverpool have started the second half well, and Salah has just seen a shot blocked as he attempted to wriggle free in the box.

46

Arsenal get us back under way.

Half-time

A stat from our friends at Opta...

Liverpool have kept their opponents at bay in the first half of 15 of their last 17 Premier League matches.

Half-time

Take a look at the stats from an absorbing first half below...

Half Time

And breathe!

It was fast and frenetic from the word go in that first half, with both teams displaying their willingness to attack throughout an engrossing 45 minutes.

Mane had a goal ruled out for offside when he tucked home the rebound after Firmino had struck the post, with Lacazette also being denied by the flag later in the half.

Mkhitaryan went close with a header, while Van Dijk then hit the post on the stroke of half-time - but there’s nothing to choose between the sides at the interval.

45

Van Dijk hits the post!

The No.4 beats Leno to Milner's cross, but his glanced header comes back off the woodwork.

40

And now Arsenal have a goal disallowed - Mustafi was offside as he nodded Ozil's cross back across goal for Lacazette to tap in.

39

Ozil finds Lacazette with a clever flick, but the striker drags his shot wide from an angle.

31

Neat link-up between Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang ends with the latter seeing a shot deflected wide.

Alisson then races off his line to beat Aubameyang to Lacazette's throughball.

This game is being played at an incredible tempo - surely a goal is on the way...

24

Now Robertson tests Leno with a stinging drive. The Reds have shaded the last 10 minutes or so.

23

A great chance for Van Dijk!

The centre-back stayed up after a corner and is found free in the area by Salah, but his shot is smothered by Leno.

18

Mane has a goal disallowed!

Firmino hits the post after dinking a cute Alexander-Arnold pass over Leno and Sadio is there to slot in the rebound - but the assistant's flag is up.

It's end to end stuff here.

16

Mkhitaryan beats Alisson to a cross, but his header goes just wide of the empty net.

That was close.

14

A vital block from Gomez deflects Aubameyang's shot wide, before Alisson gets down well to save from Xhaka following a well-worked Arsenal corner.

8

Milner's raking pass from deep inside his own half is just, and only just, overhit as he attempted to find the run of Salah.

Both sides are showing plenty of attacking intent in the early stages.

6

The Reds' first foray forward ends with Robertson sending in a cross that's cleared for a corner.

Salah takes, but it comes to nothing. Soon after, Mane just overruns the ball as he attempts to surge into the box on the byline.

Liverpool have found their feet after a testing first few minutes.

4

Arsenal have started quickly, and Alisson has to be alert to block Lacazette's effort at the near post following Kolasinac's cross from the left.

1

After a minute's silence following last weekend's tragic events at the King Power Stadium, we're under way here.

Klopp: We need to be 100 per cent spot on

Jürgen Klopp has just spoken to BT Sport here at the Emirates - and the boss feels the Reds will need to be at their best with and without the ball to pick up a positive result.

“They have a lot of quality on the wings as well [as midfield], so we need to be there as well. That’s how it is. The defensive plan is to lead the ball in a specific area, then we try to win it and then we try to do something with it, what makes sense,” said Klopp.

“When we have the ball immediately we want to have the build up, which is difficult because they press high as well. It’s interesting, it’s a full package.

“You need to be 100 per cent with the ball, because otherwise they get it too easy from you, and against the ball you need to be 100 per cent spot on as well. So that’s how games are when two good football teams face each other. Nobody knows how the result will be, so let’s go for it.”

'The best Liverpool side for at least a decade'

That's the view of football journalist, author and tactical expert Michael Cox (aka @Zonal_Marking), whose column in the matchday programme makes for interesting reading.

"Jürgen Klopp’s side started the weekend level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, and this seems like the best Liverpool side for at least a decade," Cox writes.

"Klopp’s Liverpool were initially a purely energetic, combative side, who relied on counter-pressing for their attacking opportunities, but they’ve developed into a mature side boasting defensive discipline, tactical flexibility and tremendous counter-attacking speed."

Emery’s analysis on the Reds

Interesting stuff from the Arsenal boss in today’s matchday programme…

“Liverpool have developed a lot in the last year. They have quality with individual players and also their collective tactical capacity, too. One is their transitions, two is that they are developing a lot with the goalkeeper,” Emery writes.

“They build up with Alisson, the centre-backs and the midfield players. They can progress on the pitch with a lot of quality, starting with Alisson and they are dangerous when they are playing in the transition and attacking moments with very quick players like Mane, like Firmino and like Salah.”

Weather

*Weather update klaxon*

Here it is, everybody, the official Liverpoolfc.com matchday blog weather update™.

Our sources tell us to expect a reasonably mild day in north London with temperatures currently around 13 degrees. That will drop slightly by kick-off - and certainly by full-time - which takes you into the realm of wearing a coat/jacket, in our opinion.

Hat and gloves optional, as always.

Alisson: We don't fear anyone

Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker previewed the trip to north London with Liverpoolfc.com this week - and the Brazilian explained why respect for Arsenal will not outweigh his team's fearlessness.

"We're confident in our quality," he said.

"We appreciate the quality of the opposition but we can't show any fear on the pitch, we need to be brave, we need to do our best to play our best football and play the way Klopp wants us to on the pitch. It'll definitely be a great contest.

"A team with intentions of winning the Premier League needs to be winning this type of game so we're going there with victory in mind, while keeping our feet on the ground and knowing we'll need to give sweat, blood and tears to win the game."

Team news

Liverpool will definitely be without Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita today as the midfield pair continue to recover from hamstring injuries.

Mohamed Salah is fine, however, after being pictured wearing a wrist support earlier this week. "Only protection - it has no influence," said Klopp.

Arsenal boss Emery has a raft of issues to contend with, though.

Matteo Guendouzi (suspended), Mohamed Elneny (thigh), Laurent Koscielny (Achilles) and Konstantinos Mavropanos (groin) are all out of the game.

The Gunners also have fitness doubts over Hector Bellerin (thigh), Sokratis Papastathopoulos (ankle), Nacho Monreal (hamstring) and Sead Kolasinac (hamstring).

Confirmed teamsheets will land at around 4.30pm GMT.

Last time out

It was a week ago that the Reds maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a 4-1 victory over Cardiff City at Anfield.

Pre-match

Tight at the top

Only goal difference separates reigning champions Manchester City and the Reds at the top of the Premier League table after 10 games, with Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and more right in behind them.

Klopp anticipates a much tighter race at the summit than last term.

"It is probably the most exciting season for years," he said.

"Last year a few teams played really good seasons but there was no chance to catch City because by October/November the gap was already that big.

"It will probably be a fight at both ends of the table until the last matchday. It is our job to be ready for that. At the moment it looks like we are ready but we have to prove that many times this season."
