Xherdan Shaqiri won't be resting on his laurels after being hailed for 'genius' football by Jürgen Klopp.

The Liverpool No.23 followed up his assist for the match-winner at Huddersfield Town last weekend with a star showing against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday.

His key role in creating the opening goal at Anfield preceded a direct set-up for Mohamed Salah - with a deliciously deft touch - that the manager later described as ‘genius link-up play’.

But for all Shaqiri’s satisfaction with such hefty praise from Klopp, he is more concerned with continuing to fulfil the objectives given to him by the boss.

“I just want to say ‘thank you’ for that,” he said. “It is a game where I am trying my best to give him good performances. I need to try to keep going.

“I think I have the quality and vision to give good passes and you can see that I wanted to give another good performance.

“I am enjoying the football here and you can see that on the pitch. The most important thing is to win as a team and the game was brilliant from everyone.”

Shaqiri was named in the starting XI for the second successive match as Liverpool eased to a 4-0 success over Serbian champions Red Star and took top spot in Champions League Group C.

Having featured in a deeper midfield role at Huddersfield, the Switzerland international played off the right in midweek - and he is happy to be flexible on behalf of the greater good.

“Sometimes it is not simple because the manager changes a few things but you have to do your best,” he added.

“You can see on the pitch we have a lot of good players and creativity and together we can line up very well. I am proud to have started in the Champions League.”
