The Liverpool FC Academy played host to LFC Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars (PLPS) football finals last week.

Sixteen teams from local Merseyside primary schools competed in the annual event, which is the culmination of eight qualifying tournaments held from April to July.

The round-robin competition saw the teams split into four categories - Year 3-4 girls, Year 3 boys, Year 4 boys and Year 5 boys - with one side from each group taking home a winners’ trophy.

St Margaret Mary’s Catholic Junior School claimed victory in both the Year 3 and Year 5 boys' groups, while St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School and Park Brow Primary School were presented with the Year 4 boys' and the Year 3-4 girls' prizes respectively.

A total of 74 teams participated in the tournaments from the preliminary stages, providing hundreds of local pupils with the experience of playing in competitive fixtures.

David McParland, LFC Foundation project lead, said: “The PLPS programme uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to encourage children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.

“Throughout these tournaments, our LFC Foundation coaches delivered pre-match talks to the players as part of the Be Connected campaign, which highlights the importance of teamwork both on and off the pitch.

“The youngsters then had the chance to put these skills into practice in a competitive environment, while having fun with their friends and peers."
