On this day 55 years ago Bill Shankly made one of his most important signings when Ian St John joined the Reds.

The legendary former No.9 was signed from Motherwell on May 2, 1961, and went on to make 425 appearances in a red shirt, notching 118 goals.
St John famously scored the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup final against Leeds United to give the Reds their first success in the famous competition.
