Barcelona have beaten Juventus in the race to sign in-demand Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The centre-back has long been admired by Europe’s biggest clubs after enjoying a sensational rise through the ranks in Amsterdam.

He further enhanced his glowing reputation last week by helping Ajax knock holders Real Madrid out of the Champions League.

Premier League pair Liverpool and Arsenal are also reportedly interested in the defender, while German giants Bayern Munich have been keeping a close eye on his situation.

But according to Calciomercato , the defender is intent on joining Barcelona where he will link up with current Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong.

The article does state, however, that a deal with Barca isn’t a formality just yet due to Juventus ’ good relationship with De Ligt's agent Mino Raiola.

For now though, the defender will want to focus on the season with Ajax - and he sees no reason why they can’t continue their Champions League dream.
