River Plate president Rodolfo D'Onofriohas has confirmed Liverpool are interested in signing Gabriel Mercado.

The 29-year-old is currently playing for Argentina in the Copa America.

Jurgen Klopp was reportedly scouting the defender in last week’s clash between Argentina and Chile.

And now River Plate’s president has confirmed Klopp is interested in bringing Mercado to Anfield this summer.

However any transfer depends on the defender receiving a work permit, which he could earn if Argentina win the tournament.

“Klopp likes him,” D’Onofriohas told Fox Sports.

“But for Mercado to go to England, Argentina need to be champions.

“Winning a title with the national team would allow him to play in England.”
