River Plate and Argentina defender Gabriel Mercado is emerging as a possible transfer target for Liverpool, according to reports.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp personally ran the rule on the 29-year-old when present at his country’s clash with Chile in the Copa America last Tuesday.

This was the fixture where the German was sat next to the brother of Gonzalo Higuain, where rumours quickly surfaced regarding a transfer move for the Napoli striker – claims which were quickly dismissed by the Anfield club.

It was said Klopp took in the game while on holiday in the United States, but The Mirror claims the Liverpool manager was also present to take a look at Mercado, who is a right-back by trade yet can play in central defence or the right side of midfield.
