Jürgen Klopp will carefully consider whether to make more changes against Maribor than the one he has already confirmed: Loris Karius in for Simon Mignolet.
Karius is set to play in the Champions League again, with the Reds taking on the Slovenian champions tonight following previous draws with Sevilla and Spartak Moscow in Group E.
Sadio Mane is, of course, injured and unavailable while Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana remain absent despite the latter’s return to Melwood to step up his rehabilitation on Monday.
After a strong cameo in the weekend stalemate with Manchester United, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has staked his claim for a starting place in Maribor.
“When he came on, I think it was obvious it was a big step and I was really happy about this,” Klopp – who named a 21-man squad for the tie – told Liverpoolfc.com on the team flight yesterday.
The manager also explained the thought process regarding any alterations to his XI.
“It’s the last place where I would ever [rotate]. Yes, we will make maybe one or two changes, we will see,” said the German. “But the first job is not to underestimate the opponent.”
Ben Woodburn has travelled to Slovenia but will again be part of the U19s side as they face the same opponents in their third game of the UEFA Youth League.
The home side suffered an injury blow on the eve of the tie, as forward Luka Zahovic broke a metal plate in his collar bone in training and therefore requires surgery.
“We have done the analysis, so everyone knows what needs to be done,” said Maribor coach Darko Milanic in his preview of the encounter.
“We’d like to be in a good position to counter. It’s one of those matches where there will be no let-up. Hard work without rest is the key. We have quality substitutes when the time comes.”
