Liverpool silenced the Santiago Bernabeu on this day in 2009.

The opening leg of the Champions League knockout clash with Real Madrid was on course for a goalless draw in Spain – until one of the smallest players on the pitch popped up with a headed winner.

Yossi Benayoun was the scorer in the 82nd minute, meeting Fabio Aurelio’s curling cross with a well-placed flick beyond Iker Casillas to put Rafael Benitez’s Reds in firm control of a tie they would ultimately win 5-0 on aggregate.

Further back in time, February 25, 2001 was the day Liverpool secured the first of three pieces of silverware during their historic treble season.

A 1-1 draw with Birmingham City in the League Cup final in Cardiff meant a penalty shootout – and it was the Reds who held their nerve best from 12 yards to lift the trophy.

Gerard Houllier’s charges would go on to be victorious in two more cup competitions, of course, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup later in the campaign.
