On this day in 1964, Liverpool played a European game at Anfield for the very first time.

Bill Shankly's side recorded a 6-1 win over Icelandic outfit Reykjavik in front of 32,597.

The game proved to be the opening chapter in the club's great European history, with many more special nights to follow in the years ahead.

On the evening, the Reds were too strong for Reykjavik as they completed an 11-1 aggregate victory.

Ian St John scored twice, while Roger Hunt, Gerry Byrne, Bobby Graham and Willie Stevenson were also on the mark.

This weekend, LFCTV will bring the history of Anfield to life in a brand new and exclusive documentary.

Airing for the first time at 8pm BST on Sunday September 18, 'This Is Anfield: The Documentary' tells the complete story of Liverpool’s iconic home.
