As Liverpool prepare to host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday, memories are stirred of a lad from Kirkby who overshadowed two World Cup legends in a memorable meeting between the two.

Let's take you back to September 1978. Tottenham arrived on Merseyside parading Argentinian heroes Ricardo Villa and Osvaldo Ardiles, and hopes were high among the visiting Spurs faithful that this could be a rare away day success in L4.

However, they hadn't banked on a perm-headed Scouser called Terry McDermott, who was to upstage them with perhaps the best goal Anfield has ever witnessed.

David Johnson's searching pass found Steve Heighway down the left wing and his wonderful cross was powered home by the head of McDermott into the Anfield Road End net at the back post.

McDermott, of course, netted Liverpool's opener en route to winning their first ever European Cup final a year earlier in Rome against Borussia Moenchengladbach, but the 7-0 win against Tottenham is a moment he is proud to be remembered for the most.

"It brings back fabulous memories for me and it's hard to forget it as the goal is always on LFC TV," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I'm an LFC TV addict now! It's great to watch because there is some great stuff on there from the '70s and '80s and you can never forget those memories.

"That goal against Tottenham was more of a shock to everyone, to be honest, because I wasn't renowned for my heading, that's for certain. I remember Bob Paisley saying that was the best goal he has ever seen at Anfield.

"The build-up to the goal came from a corner. One minute I was on the post from their corner and 30 seconds later the ball was in the back of the Tottenham net!

"It was one-touch football at its best. It started with an unbelievable ball by David Johnson out to Steve Heighway, who put a pinpoint cross in and I headed it in. I don't know what I was doing up there and how I managed to sprint that fast but it was a great feeling.

"I'm very proud of that, because when dear Bob says that's the best goal he ever saw at Anfield, you've got to listen, haven't you?

"It was a dream come true to play for the team I supported as a kid. My dad used to take me to watch Billy Liddell, and I remember when I signed in 1974 it was a record time I decided to sign, as it took me 32 seconds to say yes! I wasn't interested in the money, I just wanted to put on that red shirt."

McDermott netted 81 goals in 329 appearances at Anfield and another unforgettable strike against Tottenham also lives long in the memory banks, only this time it came at White Hart Lane.

It was the FA Cup quarter-final in March 1980 when McDermott sent a scorching volley into the corner of the net. The hit was that good it was voted Match of the Day's goal of the season.

"I enjoyed scoring against Tottenham," beams McDermott. "This one was just a bad pass I think! Ardiles tried to clear the ball and the ball came to me on the corner of the box.

"I still say to this day I don't know whether I meant to flick it up or whether it was just bad control, probably bad control.

"You could hit the ball 10 times again and probably miss 10 times, but it was nice to see it go in. It was one of those goals that had two goalkeepers been there, none of them would have seen it."

As to the current Liverpool team of 2014, McDermott, who was assistant boss to Kevin Keegan with the Newcastle United team dubbed 'the entertainers' during the 1990s, admits the style Brendan Rodgers has imposed on the Reds is very similar.

"Liverpool have a fantastic chance of winning the title," he said. "Brendan has done an unbelievable job and they are going to get better.

"When you have Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and the others linking together, there's not many teams that can live with them.

"They remind me of the Newcastle side that I was a part of with Kevin. The football is very similar; we conceded more goals than this Liverpool team do, but we loved to attack. It's a pleasure to watch.

"People have said this season that Liverpool are a lot of people's second favourite team because of the football they play and I would go along with that.

"It's fantastic and the thing that pleases me more than anything is Brendan has given the young kids a chance, the likes of Jon Flanagan, who has grabbed it."

On Sunday's crunch meeting with Tim Sherwood's Tottenham at Anfield, McDermott insists Liverpool can inflict a Barclays Premier League double over the North London side after the 5-0 thumping at White Hart Lane back in December.

He added: "Tottenham are conceding goals and, with the firepower Liverpool have, I fancy the Reds at home.

"I really do think they have a great chance of winning the league. Chelsea are a good team, so are Manchester City, but they are beatable.

"If Liverpool keep winning their games, there is no reason why they can't do it. I certainly hope we can do it because it's been too long since Liverpool last won the league."
